Living Together in Unity

by Jerry Senn

One of the most pleasant environments for spiritual growth is when brethren love and respect one another, even though they may not come from common ethnic roots or even always agree on political or religious issues. Such issues are not allowed to divide when love abounds in Christ’s kingdom. He has only one body!!!

As the psalmist said:

Behold, how good and pleasant it is
when brothers dwell together in unity!
It is like the precious oil on the head,
Running down the beard,
On the head of Aaron,
Running down on the collar of his robes!
It is like the dew of Herman,
Which falls on the mountains of Zion!
For there the Lord has commanded
The blessing,
Life forevermore
—Psalm 133

The heart of body life begins where we all know who we are in Christ. When we have a sober estimate of ourselves as saved sinners, with value and love flowing to each from God’s heart. We all have a part to play, a role to strive to exercise and develop for God’s glory. And, it is only when each member contributes the help of his or her task that the body of the church functions as it ought to function.

When I know God’s mercy, give myself to him totally and seek to do his will, I’ll gladly take my place alongside every other body member and work to bring glory to God who loves men.
