Why are You Here?

by Jerry Senn

Have you ever asked “why did God place me where I am today?” As we grow older we may feel our age keeps us from being effective servants of our Lord. To some extent this is true, however, there is always something we can do for the cause of Christ no matter what.

Last August I attended the congregation at Andrews, NC for a morning service. The man who taught the adult class has a chronic lung problem which causes him to be connected to an oxygen device at all times. He needed a long tube and mask to assist his breathing. In addition he and his family travel about fifty miles each Lord’s day so he can serve as teacher for about 25 members.

I was greatly impressed by the effort he put forth. He could have allowed his physical condition to prevent him from putting forth so much effort to serve. His teaching was amazing and I was moved to reevaluate my own service as I get older and a bit more feeble.

John Oxenham’s little poem may be helpful as we consider our value in God’s Kingdom.

Is your place a small place?
Tend it with care!
He set you there.

Is your place a large place?
Guard it with care!
He set you there.

Whatever your place, it is
Not yours alone, but His,
Who set you there.
