Vote, Vote, Vote !!!

by Jerry Senn

We hear this plea everywhere we turn these days. Our politicians spend literally billions to encourage us to “go to the poles and vote, vote, vote.” What should a child of God be thinking in such times?

It is my belief that it is the duty of every responsible citizen to vote, and to vote for leaders who promote Christian principles. God is certainly in control, but that does not mean we should do nothing to further His will on earth. We are commanded to pray for our leaders (1 Timothy 2:1-4).

Our society is filled with leaders who profess to uphold those principles and go to great lengths to make sure that message is hammered into their appeals. Be aware of the possibility of their failure to do so.

Much of the suffering on earth is because of godless leadership (Proverbs 28:12). Scripture gives Christians instructions to obey authority unless it contradicts the Lord’s commands (Acts 5:27-29; Romans 13:1-7). As believers in Christ we ought to strive to choose leaders who will be true to their promises and be led by their Creator.

Christians should vote so as to be led by those who give evidence by their actions that they are attempting to do right to the best of their ability; however, we can never be totally certain that will happen.

Yet, we are not to be blamed when those promises are not kept unless we know “up front” they’re dishonest. We are to pray that we will do our best to select the best candidates, and pray that they will do their best. Just remember, there are no perfect voters or candidates.

We must make our own decisions based on our own conscience, and pray that it will contribute to the betterment of society.

Vote, vote, vote!!! Yes, but remember Paul’s words of wisdom: “Whatever you do, do it to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). It’s a privilege in our (still) free society to express ourselves to accomplish God’s purposes.
