“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father by glory forever and ever. Amen.” (Philippians 4:19, 20).
Paul had just expressed great appreciation for the generosity of his brethren in Philippi because of their constant material support and loving concern over many years. However his “secret” to being content was that no matter the circumstances his reliance was on God. His famous statement, “I can do all things through him who strengthens me” (v 13). This expresses his gratitude and contented, confident spirit.
The apostle continues to assure his brothers and sisters in Philippi that they too could and should be confident that God always provides for the needs of his children.
God’s powerful resources are without limits. The Psalmist wrote: “I have no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens, for every animal of the forest in mine, and the cattle of a thousand hills” (Ps 50:9-10).
Paul demonstrates his commitment and confidence as a spirit worth imitating by calling for all believers to trust the Father’s power and riches.
It is true that God “sends his rain the unjust” (materially), but all spiritual blessings are found in being united to Jesus. God’s richest gifts and treasures are found only in Christ, God’s son, our redeemer and friend.
Whatever Christ has for you to do, he will supply the power. Whatever gift He gives you, he will give the power to exercise that gift.
The Christian life is not only difficult, it is also impossible unless we develop abounding trust, not in ourselves, but in his promises, his riches in glory.
“Fear not, I am with you; be not afraid, for I am you God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isa 41:10).
